Welcome to Malmö, a city brimming with history, culture, and a vibrant atmosphere waiting to be explored. Tucked away in Sweden, Malmö has a charm that captivates visitors from near and far. From quaint cobblestone streets to modern architectural wonders, this city offers a perfect blend of old-world charm and contemporary flair.
Getting Here from Copenhagen
During our trip to Copenhagen, we deviated from our planned schedule to spend a few hours in Sweden in the evening. The journey from Copenhagen, Denmark to Malmö, Sweden only requires a 40-minute travel time. We started our adventure with a brief ten-minute walk from our hotel to the Kastrup Metro Station. From there, we took a train to Copenhagen Airport, bought tickets to Malmö, and then began our Swedish excursion.
As we left the train station in Malmö, we were surrounded by a blend of stunning architecture and historic charm. Walking across the picturesque bridge, we made our way towards St. Peter's Church.
It was impossible to resist stopping for a gelato on the way!
Visit St. Peter's Church
Saint Peter's Church is a Brick Gothic church built in the 14th century as the main church in the city. Initially a Catholic church, this stunning example of Gothic architecture was pivotal during the Reformation and was among the rare medieval churches in Denmark that suffered damage due to iconoclasm post-Reformation. Following the Reformation, the once Catholic church transitioned into a Lutheran church, a status it still holds today. Since we were here late in the evening, we simply appreciated the beautiful architecture from the outside.
Wander Through Malmö's Old Town
Step back in time as you stroll through the charming streets of Malmö's Old Town, Gamla Staden, which is located just a few short blocks from St. Peter's church. Immerse yourself in the city's history as you admire well-preserved buildings dating back centuries. Don't miss the iconic Stortorget, the oldest square in Malmö, surrounded by picturesque buildings and quaint cafes offering a perfect spot to relax and soak in the atmosphere.
Built in 1540, On the eastern side, you can find the historic Malmö Town Hall (2nd photo), which was built between 1544 and 1547 and dominating the square is a grand equestrian statue of King Karl X Gustav.
In this place, you can also discover a lovely and distinctive water fountain as well as shops to explore.
Indulge in Culinary Delights at Lilla Torg
At Lilla Torg, you have the opportunity to enjoy local food at a bar or restaurant, appreciate design and architecture exhibitions, and savor live music performances. The square's charm lies in its cobblestone streets and traditional half-timbered buildings. Unfortunately, due to our limited time, we only strolled through these streets to admire its appeal.
As the sun started to go down, we started our journey back to Denmark. We followed the same path back to the train station and embarked on our trip back. Although brief, our time in Malmö had a mix of emotions. It left us eager to discover more of Sweden when we come back to Scandinavia in the future. We said adjö (goodbye in Swedish) to Malmö and enjoyed the stunning sunset.
Embark on a journey through Malmö's hidden gems, where history, culture, and modernity converge to create a city unlike any other. We can't wait to return to this enchanting Swedish city and more of Sweden.
